So happy the free version of this article is finally out!
Have you ever been called a narc, happily I never have, but I’ve met my fair share of them. A narcissist is someone who has an excessive sense of self-importance and lacks empathy for others. They may also be vain, selfish, and preoccupied with power, beauty, or success. These are people who only thin about themselves shut out other peoples ideas and listen to their own. Narcs don’t want attention they want recognition they want to be respected and beloved by all. Most people that are called narcs don’t have pathological narcissism in fact it’s very rare about 0.5%-1% of the population are actually affected.
What to do with Narcs
How to deal with a narc, everyone at least once in their life meets this type of person or in some situations gets into a relationship with this type of person. Trying to communicate with a narc can be frustrating and can lead to stress, arguing with them changes nothing and they only seem to talk about themselves. The best way to deal with this is to establish boundaries and emotionally distance yourself. This may be hard for some people especially those who are in a relationship, but living with a narc can be very problematic it can lead to lots of unhealthy stress and eventually burnout.
What happens when a narc has a loss of self-esteem or feels discouraged
When a narcissist’s perfect image of themselves is damaged or shattered, it can lead to deep insecurities and, in some cases, depression. Narcissists are still normal people, meaning we should look out for them. When they lose their job or go through a breakup, it can be harder for them to heal than for others. For example, if a narcissist pushes away all their friends after getting a new job they can't stop bragging about, and then loses that job with no one there to comfort them, it can hit them very hard.
Made or Born
Are narcs just people with a depressing backstory or childhood trauma, in reality no it come from their genes. So, does that mean there parent were also narcs? Short answer, yes. The certain personality trait associated with narcissism is called NPD and multiple studies have shown that the parents of narcs also have traces of NPD. Another study linked dramatic attention seeking preschoolers and kindergarteners with narcissistic adults, showing that these traits can be seen as early as a kid starts to speak.
Conclusion
Narcs can be stressful and frustrating, but their real people too, with real feelings and thoughts. NPD is a mental illness and is very hereditary meaning that there are entire families like this. I have personally not met many narcs and if I do, I try to stay away because trouble always follows them. Comment down below if you’ve ever known any narcs or been in a relationship with one, I’d like to here from all your experiences.
